Passion.
Tom is a “dirt forester to the core”, spending the last 29 years practicing forestry for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) Forestry Division in Iowa County, Wisconsin. Early in 2022, Tom decided to leave WDNR and form Tom Hill Forestry LLC specifically to spend more time working in the woods directly with private forest landowners throughout the Driftless region of Southwest Wisconsin. Tom’s passion for forestry is infectious and his desire to help landowners improve woodland habitat, maximize forest land opportunity, and navigate land ownership is important to him.
Experience.
Tom has assisted thousands of landowners with navigating all aspects of forest ownership including driftless area forest management, the Wisconsin Managed Forest Law program, and federal land improvement programs. An avid hunter, Tom understands the value of healthy habitat, vegetation management, and good management planning to help achieve landowner goals and prioritize these activities to ensure success. Tom understands the complexities associated with the programs and how they relate to landowner goals and success.
Foundation.
Tom’s zest for driftless area forest management started early. While growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, he fished and hunted throughout Southwestern Wisconsin and Eastern Iowa. Spending countless hours chasing trout in the spring fed driftless streams and hunting the game that abound in the large hills surrounding the Mississippi River, Tom could never “get enough” of being in the woods! He took this passion to forestry school in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan at Michigan Technological University and has never looked back. A unique and extensive background of working with forest management, land planning, forest regeneration, and nursery production along with a real passion for hunting and fishing all helped Tom develop the foundation for his forest management perspectives.
